Sonic Generations is set to land later this year to celebrate the hedgehog’s birthday, and you just know it will disappoint somehow. Here’s the teaser trailer…
The thing with Sonic these days is how we all know his next game will to blow, the trick is figuring out how and to what degree (though in the case of the latter, it’s often a lot). Very little info is presented above, though one possible theory could be how the player can chose to play as old school Sonic in addition to the blue hedgehog that he has become. Maybe switching between the two, depending on the level, or maybe even simultaneously, a la how Tails used to follow Sonic around, though maybe something more advance that that? Could be some multiplayer, cooperative affair, a la Knuckles Chaotix?
But this is Sonic we’re talking about, that’s way too easy. Either the big gimmick has yet to revealed, much like how Sega was actually proud of the fact that he turned into a werewolf (sorry, “werehog”), enough to actually advertise it, or simply discovered when playing through the inevitable wretchedly piece together train-wreck of a game. Like Sonic making out with a dead human girl whose like 14, or how we discover Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic’s gun toting cousin from East LA, is supposed to be the cure to cancer, literally (and no, I am not making this up, go ahead and beat Sonic Adventure 2 to see that I’m correct).
My favorite Sonic-related memory was when I was at a press function for Sonic’s HD debut on the Xbox 360 and PS3, just called Sonic The Hedgehog (that’s the one where he swaps spit with a human btw). I assumed the reigns of Sonic first, and was on my best behavior, so I wasn’t ultra annoying about the wacky camera angles that caused me to die literally every 3 seconds. But when it came time to play through the stage that belonged to the new character in the franchise, Silver The Hedgehog, was told that he had “a mysterious connection” to Sonic. Right then and there, I could not help myself:
“Let me guess… he’s from the future and is actually Sonic’s son, who goes back in time to kill his dad for doing something he did, which was supposed to be something good, but in fact created a nightmare apocalyptic landscape that Silver and his people must endure, but we eventually discover that Robotnik has been brainwashing Silver or something like that. Right?”
The Sega rep just looked at me. And since then, they haven’t returned my phone calls. I have no idea if I was on the money, but I’m assuming I wasn’t very far from the mark.
